FAQs & Other Helpful Information

  • 1. What is a riser, and what is the cost of installing or replacing a septic tank riser?

A: A riser is a tube, usually made of plastic, connected to the top of the septic tank. It extends up to the ground surface, creating access to the septic tank for pumping and maintenance. The cost of riser and lid installation or replacement is usually around $300-$500 per riser, depending on the site location, depth of the tank, and diameter of the riser.

  • 2. Can I replace my septic tank only, without the county requiring me to replace the entire system?

A: Yes. As long as the drainage (leach lines, sand filter, etc.) is still working, the county will allow us to apply for a permit to replace the old tank with a new tank and hook it up to the existing drainage.

  • 3. What is the cost of a septic tank replacement?

A: Replacing the septic tank only can range in price from around $3,500 - $5,000 or more, depending on many different factors such as site location, access, size of the tank, etc. This price includes the cost of the permit, pumping the old tank, removing the old tank, and hooking up and backfilling the new tank. • 4. What is an ATT septic system?

A: ATT stands for Alternative Treatment Technology. This is the new type of system required by many counties in Oregon, including Deschutes County. It typically involves a septic tank (which captures and treats the solids), followed by an ATT pod (which treats the wastewater), and then finally drainage (usually a sand filter or leach lines).

  • 5. Are ATT systems required everywhere?

A: Many counties in Oregon require an ATT system to be installed as part of new construction or as a replacement system if the current system has failed. ATT septic systems are not yet required in Klamath County or Lake County but are required almost everywhere in Deschutes County, with minimal exceptions.

  • 6. What is the cost of installing a new ATT septic system?

A: This cost can vary quite a lot, depending on what type of system the county is mandating for your specific property, the rising cost of materials, and the time of year. Pricing for installing a new ATT system will typically fall in the range of $22,000 - $32,000, depending on the previously mentioned factors and more.
